Ebay. I found out later that's how Allison Sohn, Adam Hughes' girlfriend, put my name down in Mid-Ohio '03, instead of Eddy. Not that you'll ever see this piece over there.
This time I managed to be number four on Adam Hughes’ highly-coveted list. That’s the closest I’ve been all year. Not bad. Back at MegaCon earlier in the year, I was looking for him to start my Ghost in the Shell theme off with a bang.
Unfortunately, I was too busy looking around Artist’s Alley to find him at Gaijin Studios’ exhibitor booth. I guess those maps in the program guides are good for something after all.
I didn’t even bother chasing him down in San Diego, but I did land tenth on his list in Baltimore, only to find out later he ended the show with number nine on the list. Oh, so close.
Now, my wait was finally over in Mid-Ohio.
I’d left some reference with him earlier in the day and a nice 11” x 17” bristol board, so it was finally Ghost in the Shell time. He asked if I wanted her drawn in Shirow's style or his own. Definitely his own. I watched him draw that beauty from start to finish too, seeing her come to life right in front of me.
And maybe twenty-minutes later, he was done. During that time, we talked about upcoming movies and what comics Allison likes to read.
Well, I now had my first, full-figured Adam Hughes sketch to call my very own. My Ghost in the Shell theme is now open for business.
As Jeff Moy looked on in appreciation, Adam said “Masamune draws the best breasts.” He even added that he was very happy with the way it turned out too. Although, not as happy as I am now.
Thanks again, Adam.
