Description
Mark Schultz started the book for me. It took 5 years to get it, but it was well worth it! This is an 11 x 17 inch sketchbook, so the piece is pretty big! I just saw Mark's 2nd book of sketches and assorted art & this piece is a 2 page spread in the book! Cool!

Update: I got the 2024 version of Portfolio that also includes this art & it had some more information from Mark about the piece. He wrote "Obscure fun fact: This composition and subject transmuted into the illustration on Storms at Sea page 22."

I am awestruck...unbelievable piece. Just when I think I have seen everything from Schultz he pulls out another great one. Love the cyclops in the background.

Now just make sure the inside sketches are on par with this piece! Absolutely gorgeous! - Joel Thingvall, www.wonderthing.com

Can you imagine the poor sap who has to draw the sketch on the next page? LOL. Amazing.

Funny story... I was searching images on Google and typed in "mythology" and this image came up. It was not attached to this site, it was just floating out in the great void that is the internet... I thought this was the cover to a 1950's or 1960's book on Mythology, while all the time it was here, in a CAF member gallery... anyhow, that is one of my all time favourite pieces, and you are a lucky fellow to be the proud owner! Thanks for sharing!

That is remarkable! It's just such a shame that it's cut in half!? That should be one, big framable piece!!

I expect something like this as the end page of a published illustrated novel, not a personal sketchbook. Congratulations, it's spectacular.

An absolute STUNNER! It has a great vintage feel.

Now if only there were a Craig Hamilton piece in the sketchbook it would be perfect!

If ever I was driven to kill someone for a piece of artwork this would be it! Happy Halloween...

If my memory's not playing tricks on me, you had your sketchbook at San Diego some years ago, and I saw this beauty for real. I remember seeing it, but had forgotten how incredible it is! So special, Phillip!

Certainly one of the most crazy sketch book commissions I've seen, and one of the central pieces in your collection.

What a masterpiece. Much better ending for the gods than in the movie "Immortals".
