This splash page is from much lameneted "Countdown to Final Crisis", and one of the more infamous scenes, Darkseid in a barcalounger.

I saw on some other message board it looks like Darkseid may have put on some weight from having a few too many brews (stifle, and gimme another cold one, yous ding-bat yous!!!). I actually bought the original art for this page from Keith Champagne at the 2008 Knoxville Adventure Con (held underneath the glorious Wig Sphere...I mean Sunsphere in Knoxville, TN). Just shows you never know where you're going to find a page of original comic art.

Also shows you an even nastier image on Darkseid getting ready to pull a Sharon Stone "Basic Instinct" shot. Uuugggg!!! This is the only piece of original comic art I have related to "Final Crisis". It also brings up one of the urban legends of "Final Crisis". Supposedly, both "Countdown to Final Crisis" and "Death of the New Gods" were direct lead ins into "Final Crisis". Apparently, this was retracted as "Final Crisis" came out, which is one reason why you have Orion die three times...once in each series.

According to Grant Morrison "To reiterate, hopefully for the last time, when we started work on Final Crisis, J.G. and I had no idea what was going to happen in Countdown or Death Of The New Gods because neither of those books existed at that point. The Countdown writers were later asked to ‘seed’ material from Final Crisis and in some cases, probably due to the pressure of filling the pages of a weekly book, that seeding amounted to entire plotlines veering off in directions I had never envisaged, anticipated or planned for in Final Crisis. The way I see it readers can choose to spend the rest of the year fixating on the plot quirks of a series which has ended, or they can breathe a sight of relief, settle back and enjoy the shiny new DC universe status quo we’re setting up in the pages of Final Crisis and its satellite books. I’m sure both of these paths to enlightenment will find adherents of different temperaments."

Actually, I think "Final Crisis" makes no sense at all unless you have the lead ins from "Countdown" and "Death of the New Gods". "Death of the New Gods" was pretty good, and "Countdown to Final Crisis" has some interesting ideas (Supeboy-Prime vs Monarch, Turtle Jimmy Olsen vs Darkseid), it was just poorly executed and for the most part, drawn. You can see they were trying to return to some old ideas (Captain Atom as Monarch) or play to the fanboys (The Many Changes of Jimmy Olsen) or perverts (Dark Mary Marvel), but it just didn't come together.

As for "Final Crisis" itself, I sat down and read the entire series again in one sitting, including the two "Superman Beyond" books. And all in all, like most Grant Morrison stories, it makes a whole lot more sense in one sitting. The story is actually pretty good, although "Darkseid taking over the Earth" has been done before (and will be done again). That is, the story is pretty good until issue #7. The we get "Oh, Darksied is not the big bad...its a Vampire...and lets use a literal 'deux ex machina' to save the day!!!" The "Final Crisis" turns out to be the final crisis for the Monitors. However, I prefer to call this the "Krazy Kirby Krisis", as Grant Morrison uses the "Death of the New Gods" and "Final Crisis" to build the world of "Kamandi". I guess Morrison was right in that "Final Crisis" started with "Anthro" and ended with "Kamandi" (actually ended with Batman, but whose splitting bat hairs). The way issue #7 ended up, it still hard to tell if the rumored re-write of the end was true or not. Once thing is certain, once again Morrsion pulled items together from his own works ("Animal Man", "Seven Soldiers of Victory") and the silver age ("New Gods", "Atomic Knights", "Kamandi", "Talky Tawny") to build "Kirby World", but it just didn't come together as a crisis event. I think DC should have made "The Sinestro War" as "Final Crisis", since it had characters from almost every previous DC Crisis combined, and would have been the straight segway to "Blackest Night". However, just to show I'm not totally jaded, Morrison pulled off the perfect "Grant Morrison's world meets the Silver Age" with "All Star Superman", which was b!tchin'. My next issue of Page 23 will be my "Easter Egg" issues in honor of Easter. We'll then segway into a "Blackest Night" tie in (itself ending this week) with the episodes titled "YOU'VE BEEN FRIDGED"...hold onto your popcicles...
