Not sure if it was Arthur or Mike Mignola who told me this story, but I will share it with you as it may give the viewer some rather special insight to this piece. While Arthur was working on the pencils for the cover, he was having problems with a certain portion of the female anatomy. Luckily, Mike was there and more than eager to jump in with a helping hand. So now, whenever Mike see's this image, he is always the first to proclaim, "HEY, those are MY boobs!" One of THE EIGHT, you'll find some of the others elsewhere in my gallery! Thanks Lance!

(11/3/14) Finally able to shoot scans of the original art. I've done two. One with the original overlay as the main gallery image, and one without the overlay in the Additional Images section. Enjoy.

My favorite cover out of all 100 issues of the New Mutants! Just GREAT!!!

An amazing cover. On paper, you wouldn't think pairing Bill's loose inks with Art's tight pencils would work... but man does it ever. Eric - another fine example my friend.

I know exactly what you mean Scott. There's a cover Arthur did with Klaus Janson and the inks were really overpowering! At least in this instance Bill left a lot of room for many of Arthur's signature sylistic elements to shine through, making it a true collaboration with great results!

I agree, definitely one of the best covers of the New Mutants run! Art Adams and Bill Sienkiewicz?!? WOW!

I figure after about 50 or so visits to this image it was due time to leave a comment - this is so cool Eric - I assume I'll be back another 50 just by the end of next week :)

This may be one of the most unlikely combination of styles around. Usually Bill let's it be known he's the inker but this looks like Arthur, which shows just how powerful Adams vision is.

You're absolutely right Tom! And I probably should've discussed that in my description. Much like Kevin Nowlan, Bill is a very dominant inker. But while his stylistic signatures are clearly evident in this piece, he does allow Arthur's work to shine through. Definitely the best of both worlds!

Nothing short of breath-taking for its beauty and its eeriness.

Thanks for the comment Ryan.  I think the eerie element probably have more to do with Bill's inks than anything else.

This has it all. Nostalgia - legendary artists - and an amazing cover concept! Love the perspective in this shot and the story the cover tells. New Mutants was the first comic book that felt like it was "mine". I was reading the X-Men and other Marvel titles and New Mutants was the first title I started reading, fresh off the newsstand, from the very beginning. I felt like I was on the ground floor to something special, and being a young teen these characters spoke to me more than say, Storm or Cyclops. Amazing amazing amazing addition to your collection.

Thanks Steve!  I absolutely agree about the amazing concept.  In fact, I think Arthur liked it so much that he paid tribute to it again on the cover of X-Men Blue #12 (see additional images above).

Mike has boobs like this? Just how overweight was he at the time and did he use a mirror while drawing them? These are questions that must be answered.

Hahahahaha!  I guess I should re-word that.  But I'm sure Mike was in excellent shape when he drew them.  Of course when you are in your 60's like me, you could probably use my man boobs as a reference for this.  Hmm, mine might actually be bigger!  LOL

I think you may find that boobs are more popular than moobs.

When you do reach your 100 target of published pieces you can let me have a chance at this one.

I guess I should probably tell you how long the line of people who are waiting for this piece is.  But if all those other people should get hit by a bus or something, the piece is yours!

Tell you what. You decide to sell and I will get a bus and run them over. Lol, like a throwback to frontier times...Okay, they did not have buses, so will hire a herd of wild buffalo to stampede over them. Problem solved in a most memorable way.. And their collections will appear fro sale, making more people happy.

Ha!  You are brutal.  So, who's going to clean up after the buffalo?

The sanitation department. Undertakers. Solicitors. The collectors families after they dispose of their collections because they have no interest in them. The auction houses who sell the art and take a cut. Many will profit from the terrible 'accident.' I can remember distinctly a person who I worked with, when I brought in about 20 or 30 thousand pounds worth of artwork to show some of what I collected, saying, "I would throw that out if I was cleaning out the house after you died." Nobody cares, except for a few crazed individuals. Can you find it in your heart to help a fellow crazy? Lol.

I love this cover so much.  I was nine years old when this issue hit the stands, and I remember making it a point not to let my mother see this cover out of fear that she'd think I was reading smut and forbid me from buying comics any further.  Heck, I think I'd be afraid it show it to her now!  Easily the most memorable cover from my childhood.

Ha!  You never know MIchael, your mom might be an Art Adams fan and not even know it.  Seriously though, I don't know if this is what Claremont and Byrne had in mind when they created her over 40 years ago.  She went from being a provocative super villain with Byrne and Austin, to a full on Victoria's Secret lingerie model with Arthur and Bill.  LOL!  I mean, it might just be me, but it appears that her assets grew considerably, while her costume got smaller and tighter.  Hmm, now that I think about it, you're right.  Don't show this to mom.  LOL!  Thanks for the comment buddy!  Be safe.
