DescriptionWow...what can I say? This is the cover to the first comic I ever bought. I remember the day clearly. I had just recently read my first comic (DD #206), which my mom had bought for me in one of those little 3-packs. I had no idea that these were monthly periodicals! So I was at the grocery store with my Dad and noticed a big magazine rack with a bunch of comics! This cover jumped out at me. One because I recognized Daredevil from the other comic I'd read, and two, I LOVED the irony of the "Man Without Fear" subtitle against the image on the cover. My love affair with comics and Daredevil really began that day. This cover showed up on eBay many years ago...I bid, but my bid didn't even come close to the whopping closing bid of nearly $1000. A few years later it surfaced again...and again the price, significantly higher this time around was out of reach. Finally it was in the hands of Ken Danker for quite some time, but it wasn't until Mike Pascale wrote an entry on Wednesday's Heroes' blog about grails that I finally decided I HAD to have this cover. I contacted Ken and he had just traded it away the day before! You gotta be kidding me! I asked if he'd let the new owner know that I was interested in it. Low and behold the next day Jeff Siedlik emailed me and let me know he'd just gotten it from Ken (in fact it hadn't even arrived yet!). I explained the story behind the comic to me, and he without hesitation said he understood and agreed to sell it to me at a very fair price. I can't thank Jeff enough. This page has finally come "home". - You'll note JB's (?) coloring instructions at the top of the page were not followed. I gotta say I agree with the decision. Gerry Turnbull graciously sent me a jpg of the piece colored per John Byrne's instructions. It's something he'd done awhile back. While artistically, I think JB's idea looked better, from Marvel's perspective I totally understand why they insisted DD be red. Honestly, if it had been colored as a white figure, I may very well have not bought the comic back then! Social/Sharing |

Awesome cover and the story is even Greater! I wish I could remember my first comic but having read so many of them, it's kind of a blur back that far :( A huge congrats to you being able to land this one after the previous failed attempts and then big cudos to Jeff for helping you reach your Grail. Bad news though, the quest never ends..............

When a comic art collector acquires a long-sought grail, you hear a bell, and an angel gets his wings. Congrats on yours!

I've long been a big fan of the cool dichotomy that this image evokes. On the one hand, you've got the title of the comic proclaiming he's "the man without fear," and on the other hand, he's clearly come up against a foe (in this case The Beyonder, if memory serves me correctly) that has DD feeling small, insignificant, and powerless to stop. John Byrne created an instant classic with this one, Craig, and you are truly lucky to have added it to your collection, as it is truly a keystone piece. Congrats!

It’s always nice to see a fellow collector post a page with such sentimental value. Perseverance does pay off!! Congratulations!

Byrne created some of the best Marvel covers of the eighties, and this one is no exception!
I love how the cover was originally intended to be colored by JB, and Gerry has clearly showed how dynamic it would have been! Congratulations Craig, it's always nice to see great DD pieces residing in the collections of true DD fans, such as yourself!
