“Topps had the rights to the old Jack Kirby series. I wrote three double-sized issues but the artist they chose for the interiors - not Paul Gulacy, who did the covers for #1 and #2 below - turned out to be not ready for prime time. They chose not to publish the issues they had, and by the time they went to look for a new artist the company was abandoning comics.”

Paul Gulacy really went to town on this series opener for the then proposed brand new Captain Victory series. His composition of the Captain facing off against some giant desert snakes (or is that one desert hydra?) was tops! Whoops, guess that's a pun. I'd missed my chance once before with this one and therefore couldn't be happier this time. I'd had my eye on some other cool Gulacy examples, but this totally fit the bill by mixing in some unrealized KIRBY, just ideal for me!
