Description

...because this particular cover of the Phoenix rising out of the sea (OK, actually a parody of her rising out of a ditch), is by Joe Staton. I started posting my comic art this year under the moniker "The Goofs, The Banned, The Unpublished...dare you turn to Page 23!!!". My last few articles were suppose to be on the price of comic art. And, I had planned on finishing up these posts with my ten best grail pages. However, as this has evolved, turned out I'm going to be combining all three, as my last few pages posted are going to be "pages with a story." Since we are talking about college made billionares,
I actually remember buying this comic back in 1983 when I was attending college in Knoxville (aahhh, care free college days under the watchful eye of the ol' Sun Sphere, when I shouldn't have been reading comic, but inventing the internet) at one of those great little comic shops on the strip. It was as long as a bowling lane and about as wide as your out streched arms, but it was where I got my weekly fix every wednesday (also the first time I realized comics came out on wednesday). These were the days of the rise of parodies and the black and white explosion. You couldn't swing a stick without hitting someone elses take on a well know comic, or hitting some sort of irradiated under-aged reptile, rodent, or troll. The F-Men were all a parody of the Marvel Comics characters who were given superpowers by Ford Fairmont (aka a parody of Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrums' partner in crime in creating the New X-Men), the blind CEO of Fairview Sunglasses who wished to create the superhero characters into reality. He kidnapped various people around New York and gave them the powers and personality of The F-Men. After intervention by E-Man and W.I.M.P. (Who published The F-Men comics), all was returned to normal. The F-Men included:
Albatross (Phoenix (comics))
Zitpops (Cyclops (comics))
Clodhoppus (Colossus (comics))
Drizzle (Storm (comics))
Airhead (Kitty Pryde)
Slimesqueaker (Nightcrawler). This happens to be one of my favorites pieces of comic art in my collection, if for no other reason than the memories alone. I actually use to own the cover to issue #2 (posted at this web site), and have seen the price listed for the cover to issue #1. Going by these, I should have NO problem making a little pin money if I ever decide to sell this one (NOT LIKELY)!!! And as I said, once again the stars align, 'cuz coming up for my next comic art post will be some art and stories by the guy Chris Claremont passed on art duties to The All New, All Different X-men, John Byrne!!!

Nobody's commented on this yet? I know E-Man didn't get much of a following, but come on! I love those old E-man covers and this was the best!
