At its best, and I'd say this splash is an excellent example, DP had a feverish quality to it that, at times, dared the reader to make heads or tails out of it. Whereas Animal Man was more a loving tribute, D.P. was the absurd flip-side of Grant's "All the world's a comic book, and all the men and women, merely characters to be manipulated in their never-ending battle for truth, justice and four-color printing" philosophy.
