Legion of Superheroes Homage to Helmet of Fate Issue 1: Detective Chimp

Even by re-Legion standards this is an unusual choice of covers and characters. It all started when a friend of mine ,( Dave : a fellow Legion fan who prefers to fly under the radar but has an amazing collection of Legion art ) showed me a great Brainiac 5 sketch which he had commissioned from the legendary George Perez. It shows Brainy in the pose of the famors Rodain sculpture "The Thinker " gazing upon Koko the monkey who is in turn, equally intensly studying him. (image below)

That image reminded me of the Helmet of Fate cover featuring Detective Chimp. The trick was who would fit into this 31st Century Legion Mutual Admiration Society.They had to be fun characters.

FUN leads us to Beppo the Super-Monkey who with his inquisitive nature caused all sorts of Silver-Age havoc (see Superboy cover in the attached images ) while putting a huge grin on the readers faces. .He of course was a member of the Legion of Super Pets.

Quislet is this strange inter-dimensional energy being who main mission in life is TO EXPLORE THE UNIVERSE and have as MUCH FUN as possible along the way. He could jump out of his ship and temporarily inhabit inanimate objects. He caused trouble wherever he went and had a great bond with fellow Legionnaire Wildire who also only existed as energy. From then on, Trevor Von Eden and I bounced it back and forth. We took Dectective Chimps magnifying glass and drew two as each examines the other strange being.This was a fun project but difficult artistically to pull off and Trevor as usual did a masterful job. If you look closely at Quislet magnifying glass, it has a "Happy Face " on it. It's all these delightful little details that makes me recommend him without hesitation to others for their commissions.

The end results is that these 2 strange characters from different eras of the Legion mythos are natural companions and so was born the issue..Legion Two in One : Beppo the Super-Monkey and Quislet.

Neither characters are active in the current incarnation of the Legion of Superheroes but wherever they are ; of one thing I am certain, THEY ARE HAVING FUN !!
