This is an exceptional strip in which Johan, accompanied by Peewit and the Smurfs, discover the first stream of one of the seven fountains. The first panel is quite exceptional due to the presence of two heroes, the Smurfs including
Papa Smurf, Biquette, Johan’s horse and the castle of Lord Aldebert de Beaufort as a backdrop. This was the
second appearance of the Smurfs in this series, after their first ever appearance during the previous year in The Smurfs and the Magic Flute. Peyo here reaches the very peak of his graphical style, each expression being mastered to perfection, with lines being very supple, showcasing the fluidity of movements in this highly expressive strip. A genuine masterpiece of comic art!

Exceptionnelle planche où Johan, en compagnie de Pirlouit et des Schtroumpfs, découvre la première source d’une des 7 fontaines. La première case est notamment exceptionnelle de par la présence des 2 héros, des Schtroumpfs dont le Grand Schtroumpf, de Biquette, du
cheval de Johan et du château du seigneur Aldebert de Beaufort en arrière-plan. Il s’agit de la seconde apparition des Schtroumpfs dans cette série, après leur naissance l’année précédente pour La flûte à six schtroumpfs.
Peyo est ici à l’apogée de son style graphique, chaque expression est maîtrisée à la perfection, le trait est très souple, mettant particulièrement en valeur la fluidité du mouvement dans cette planche toute en expressivité. Un chef d’oeuvre du 9ème Art !
