Description

This graphite, ink, and colored pencil drawing is on the verso of the "Tweed Face" strip published April 3, 1971 (see previous entry). The "Hippy Hippo" gag ended up being used the following day, April 4, in the color Sunday strip. This is probably an abandoned first attempt to do the gag as a daily which then became a color study. The gag: Nancy and Sluggo are at the zoo. Sluggo exclaims, "Look--- the keeper is pitching hay to the hippopotamus!" After the pitched hay has fallen, wig-like, on the hippo's head, Nancy laughs, "Looks more like a HIPPYpotamus to me!" Har, har.
