Description

This is a very rare original page of what is an unpublished comic story by Steve Bissette (Swamp Thing, Taboo, Tyrant). The top in blue pencil states the comic story is BEGONZ page 2 of a 2-page story (and states that well known comic artist/colorist Ken Feduniewicz did page 1). It also states at the top this was for the Journal of Popular Culture #2. As far as I know, only the first issue of this was ever published and was one of the best examples of the alternative/underground late 1970's comics scene as that first issue has art not only by Steve Bissette, but Rick Veitch, Tom Yeates, Rick Grimes, and others who would graduate from the first year class of Joe Kubert's Art School. This 4-panel page has a great monster asking to be showered in gold or he'll destroy the world. It has been signed at the bottom with Bissette's famous spider and '78 from when this was finished. There is also his signature in blue pencil and "For Jack" - Jack Venooker - his friend from his early cartooning days who I purchased this from several years ago. Also, on the right hand side outside the illustrations is "TO THE 655 MADISON AVE MONSTER MAKERS OF A BYGONE ERA...", a reference to the Marvel offices and the early horror comics. However, it is unclear if this is a homage or if Bissette is giving a big FU to those creators considering the last panel of the comic. In any case, a GREAT early page from a modern master of horror during his most creative working period that has most probably never seen the light of day. Page measures 14" x 17" and artwork area ia ~ 10" x 15.5".
