Description

Bit of a story to this one. Sunday of Armageddon Expo, Melbourne, 2007. I had flown there that morning from Adelaide, and could only spend the day at the con before heading to Sydney that night for work, so it was literally a flying stop. I queued up for Bruce several times during the day, only to just miss out every time he left for a break or a panel. Nearing the end of the con on Sunday, Bruce had drawn countless dozens of sketches and was clearly getting tired. He announced to the large line still waiting that there would be no more.

But as luck would have it, a con staffer picked me out of the line after realising how many times I'd missed out that day. She asked Bruce for just one more sketch, and he obliged - but only if he could do it back in the Green Room over a coffee (to make things worse, some of the people who missed out were getting quite abusive). Of course I was stoked with this and got to sit one-on-one with Bruce while he did my sketch, with Gail Simone, Nicola Scott and others looking on. It was the only Cap he had done all weekend, and I think that and the more relaxed environment of the Green Room meant I got an awesome piece of art - the very last one Bruce did before leaving Australia.

What I love about Bruce's stuff is how much character he can capture with so few lines. His Cap is so Kirby-like in his square-jawed stoicism.

The postscript to the story is that after all that drama I left the sketch in the Taxi after getting to my hotel in Sydney. The scramble down the road screaming at the cab driver to stop was the most nerve wracking moment of my art-collecting life. But alls well that ends well.
