Rick Veitch did the pencils on two issues of the original Alan Moore Miracleman series, as well as working with Moore on the "flashback" titles 1963 and Supreme so he seemed like the natural choice to do this homage to the famous cover to Superman #32 from 1945 by Wayne Boring. (And of course Rick and Moore worked together on Swamp Thing as well.)
Roy Thomas asked me to use this piece as the cover to Alter Ego #87 which was the July 2009 issue. (Though he accidently credited someone else for providing it, he would later run a correction.)
