Great page from my first exposure to John Byrne as a youth.

Perhaps one of the best characterization pages of the human torch ever written. A terrific page from a great run. While Byrne's later run was highly regarded, those luscious Sinnott inks defined the FF's look for hundreds of issues and Marv Wolfman was at the top of his game here. Congratulations on a great acquisition!

I've often poked fun at the 'Marvel Dialog' in pages on this site, because it is generally overly operatic Kirby/Kirbyesque dialog, but this page I remember because it is so human.  Johnny finally facing the reality of himself.  It is profound and very moving.

"I'm shallow...all surface glitter and flash--like my stupid powers."

"I can light up the heavens, but I'm nothing more than a glorified match-stick."

"I've treated my friends abominably--what few friends I've had."

"No one's ever stuck with me...because I've never had anything real to give them!"

Wow.  That is a deeply moving moment in a comic book.  A-comic-book.  It really is.  And Byrne's portrayal of it totally hammers it home.  Tremendous.
