Johnny Hazard by Frank Robbins, 4-27-70

As I've mentioned elsewhere I don't think anyone liked Robbins's art when they were a kid but many of us have grown to love it as adults. At times it's a bit weird mix of cartooning and realism but, hey, it's comics! I've been told that by this time (having done the strip since the mid '40s) Robbins instead of penciling the strip just drew it with a brush. What really amazes me upon seeing this in person is that he could make a scene like the first panel so interesting. There is some oddness because I realized that in the 2nd panel the people are at least two different angles (the woman and the detective on the right may be oriented the same) and while the lamp might be aligned the same as the middle figure the wall with the safe and painting are on a plane all their own. I'm thinking that even the perspective on the first panel is off a bit but Robbins is so good at rendering, make the art so solid, that it still works. (The safe is angled differently than the painting and at that view the arms should be higher up and to the left. That would make them cut off a bit by the caption so he goes with what works instead of what is right.) Truly one of the masters of the brush.
