Description
This 1999 commission features Thor and characters from Thor 133 - 135. Can you name the characters (aside from Galactus and Thor, silly!)? Thor's pose is very reminiscent of the splash page of Thor 134. Special thanks to that old rascal Mitch Itkowitz for facilitating this amazing commission. Mitch, you're the best! To my surprise, in 2006 the image was used as the cover to Modern Masters Volume Eight: Walter Simonson.

24 years after my commission, in 2023 Simonson would generously create two drawings to benefit charities that would feature as a central image Asgards favorite son that was inspired by the Thor in my 1999 commission. One drawing was for the Baltimore Comic Con 2023 Hero Initiative auction, and the second for the NYCCon 2023 Charity Auction. You can refer to additional images attached. It’s fascinating to see a substantially similar image of Thor, but with different background characters, which makes the two later pieces wonderfully unique, but still close “relatives”!

Simonson stated on a Facebook post the central image of Thor was “Based on a drawing I did years ago for the TwoMorrows Modern Masters series of trade paperbacks. I did a very similar Thor in the original drawing with different background figures. Sometimes, I just don't feel like overthinking stuff! ;-)”

Finally picked up this volume in SD this year, and as I was reading it in my motel room, I kept thinking to myself that I'd seen this cover before, but couldn't recall where. Would never have remembered if I hadn't checked your latest CAF update. Anyway, congrats on a sweet Simonson example!
