I'm guessing John did these "practice" drawings..perhaps in preparation for some Coan story he was working on at the time...or..Big John just did them..for his own enjoyment.

Very nice collection of sketches. Big John is famous for doing some of his best work while just practicing and "doodling" and you have some great examples of that.
