DescriptionGus Lesnevich (1915-1964) was the World Light Heavyweight boxing champion from 1941 to 1948, when he lost his title to Freddie Mills. Lesnevich was named the Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year in 1947, which this wonderful Willard Mullin cartoon is about. Mullin's portrait of Lesnevich is terrific, with his use of dry-brush, combined with litho crayon on Coquille board. And the small portraits of sports writers at the bottom are a terrific bonus. Mullin made pen & ink look too easy.Social/Sharing |
