DescriptionThis exquisite Punch cartoon is by Frederick Henry Townsend (1968-1920), the longtime Art Editor of the magazine. I purchased the piece on eBay from a seller in Great Britain, but had no luck in making out the caption online. When I received the piece, I found that someone had erased a good deal of the caption, making it pretty unreadable. Figuring that the piece was from Punch because of Townsend's association with the magazine, and knowing that it was most likely from Christmas 1906, I went on an internet search, to see if I could turn up the printed image with caption. Very few clicks led me to a Punch archive, all viewable online. I scrolled though the 1906 issues, finally figuring out how to speed through to December. After a short while, I discovered the cartoon in the December 26, 1906 issue of the magazine. Please check out the additional image for the printed version. The cartoon is titled, "Accommodation for Boy and Beast", and the caption reads:Mother: "He certainly seems a bit sad -- this horse that Santa Claus sent you. What do you think he wants?" Son: "Do you know, Mummy, I fink he wants a train to shy at." I had to look up "to shy at" in a slang dictionary, and discovered that it means to be scared of something, or be made skittish by something. So in this case the horse would be made nervous by the train. Thanks to Martin for the correction. The ink work on this piece is pretty fantastic, and I'm thrilled to have some background on the piece. Social/Sharing |

Rob, this piece is really beautiful. The textures achieved through line hatching are terrific.
