DescriptionFreedom Brigade #84 (Sep 1986)The Reich's Iron Fist As war operations in the European Theatre heat up, can the diminished forces of the Freedom Brigade defeat the Nazi's latest death machine?!?! John Byrne does cover duty on this classic for Standard Comics' WWII-set "Freedom Brigade" series. Roll Call: The Villain A Giant Nazi Robot The Heroes Grim Reaper - Bill Norris was studying in Paris when the Nazis occupied the city, so he took up a costume and proceeded to "terrorize the terrorists", as he referred to them. He was, at one point, "number one on the Gestapo's wanted list", and was often shown working behind enemy lines in the German underground. I think of him as an inspiring patriotic character (think Captain America) who uses fear as a weapon against the Nazis (think Batman). No powers, just a fighter, with a gun and sword. (A total Z-Lister, but I like him!) The Flag - has "the speed of the wind and the strength of a 100 men" as well as invulnerability to all man-made weapons. He left a star-spangled trail behind him whenever he ran or flew. Daredevil - As a child, Bart Hill was witness to his parents' brutal murder. He trained his entire life in the art of the boomerang, eventually becoming a master boomerang marksman and acrobat. No powers. The Claw's arch-nemesis. Black Terror - possesses super strength and invulnerability Nelvana - Nelvana was a demi-goddess, could fly, travel at the speed of light, become invisible, control the weather, change form, and use her magic cloak to change into human form from light form. She was a Canadian, half-Inuit superhero and one of the first female superheroes, pre-dating Wonder Woman by about 5 months. And yet she's not on kids' backpacks, go figure. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Woo-hoo!" was my reaction when my John Byrne commission request was accepted. And it's my reaction now. I especially like the clothing drapery on Nelvana. And having the Grim Reaper drawn by Byrne is just cool. And the rest ... Byrne was one of my "big guns" of comic artists when I was collecting in the late 70s/early 80s, along with Perez, Adams, Grell, and Aparo. His work just gets better with time. So getting this is pretty sweet. Now, if only my wallet will forgive me! I'm 99.99999% that he's never drawn any of these obscurities before, certainly not professionally. Somehow, having Byrne draw them validates the premise that these guys could have become/stayed as well known as DC's and Marvel's. I know I want to read the comic this cover would belong to. And all for only 60 cents! [10/20/13: From the ByrneRobotics thread, JB says "Incidentally, despite her "family history", this is the first time I have drawn Nelvana -- or any of these guys, for that matter!"] A link to the discussion on ByrneRobotics about this commission. Large Scan 10/20/13: Note, I tweaked the price box thing and date, as I'd messed up the date in my own commission. The original art, rest assured, is untouched. And based on how much trouble I seem to have changing images on CAF, I'm not touching it again. :-) Social/Sharing |
