John drew this on 11x17 drawing paper. It's so cool to see how he worked out a page by scribbling lightly, then taking a softer pencil and sculpted the forms out with just a few lines. He really worked the same way he advocated in How to draw comics the Marvel way. This page also made me realize why i like JRJR so much. Take a look at that main figure in the third panel, then some of Romita's art, particularly his World war Hulk layouts. Very different styles but the underlying power is very similar.

Having owned the How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way - this page exemplifies how Buscema practices what he preaches. This page shows insight to the inner workings of a genius!

Because his art was so good I always thought there had to be more to it but John was telling us the truth, LOL!

The transformation from this to the finished page is mind boggling. Truly Buscema was a master draftsman.

It's hard to believe consider how little is actually on the page. It's just awe inspiring to his process, there are NO eraser marks on this at all. John didn't struggle over a page, he just scribbled in the shapes, defined the form and moved on. If that's not genius I don't know what is.

And it's also amazing how quickly he could work. Compared to all the prima donnas today who keep whining about deadlines not giving them enough time to do their best work. Such a sad excuse.

I read that John's advice to an artist complaining about trouble meeting deadlines was 'move your hands faster'. These days we are thrilled by superstar artists who get 6 issues out in a year , John did 5 books a month sometimes.
