If you look elsewhere in this gallery, you'll see a drawing of Hell-Rider, circa 1972, as drawn by the great Val Mayerick. That's the way the character looked in his short-loved black-and-white comic magazine back in the day. His back story is all summarized there.
When I contacted the incomparable Ssl Velluto about doing his version of this character, Sal asked if he could do his own spin, basically giving him a more contemporary look. Seeing as how I had been thinking about that anyway, I told Sal to have at it -- and boy, did he ever! This is Hell-Rider as he's never been seen before. You can't tell me this character couldn't headline his own comic today. Yeah, it might get canceled in 2 issues -- like his original run -- but they'd be 2 of the badassest issues you ever read. Note to self: trademark "badassest."
