Description

In 1989, Ilya Salkind produced Superboy, the TV series. As the second season began, DC began issuing Superboy : The Comic Book as a tie-in. The first issue had a photo cover with Gerard Christopher (as Superboy) holding Stacy Haiduk (as Lana Lang) in his arms. Those first issues were actually drawn by Jim Mooney, but beginning with issue 2 and to the end of the series, Kevin Maguire did the covers.

This piece is marked as "Inventory", but has a note at the bottom saying " Please stat & Run as a pin-up". If memory serves me, it did appear in the last issue that serves as a TV tie-in before it changed to the New Adventures of Superboy.

The drawing is familiar... similar to the scene in Superman : The Movie where Superman flies Lois above the clouds. In this image, Superboy floats a young Lana (dressed in a prom gown?) above the clouds in a starry night; their heads framed by the moon. Their embrace is typical high school slow dance. Young love!

After I bought this piece from Mitch years ago, I came across its companion which is the other piece in this gallery. I believe that is a commission directly inspired by this drawing showing the more mature Superman and Lois. AN interesting pair of images.
