Description
I purchased the cover art to Marvel Age #32 in the May 2013 ComicLink Featured Auction. It was “must have at first sight" for me because the piece combines so many of my favorites from Marvel’s early 1980s. Marvel Age was like a sacred document to the 14 year-old me, unlocking secrets and providing an insider’s view into the Marvel Universe on a monthly basis. Alpha Flight and Uncanny X-Men were my two favorite Marvel titles at the time and I can remember being so excited at the prospect of a cross-over between the two teams as part of the larger Asgardian Wars saga that rippled through all the mutant titles.

The characters from top to bottom:

Sasquatch
Colossus
Loki
Cyclops
Talisman
Madelyne Pryor
Rachel Summers
Rogue
Heather Hudson
Puck
Professor Xavier
Shaman
Rogue
Snowbird
Wolverine
Lockheed
Kitty Pryde
Northstar
Nightcrawler
Aurora

Having started reading Uncanny X-Men with issue #167, Paul Smith was the definitive X-artist to me at the time and still he still stands alongside John Byrne, John Romita, Jr. and a few others among my all-time favorites that I associate with the title. Between the Alpha Flight and X-Men characters penned by Paul Smith and Forebrush Man in the Marvel Age corner box, this cover features a whopping twenty characters, which is an impressive number even by Marvel Age standards. I only have a few classic Marvel covers in my original art collection, but this one clearly stands out because of the great sentimental value that it holds for me.

I have similar memories of Marvel Age, and it sounds like I'm the same age as you. And there were so many great pieces of art that were produced solely for that magazine (i.e., Mazzucchelli's Daredevil cover for the upcoming Born Again story, Leonardi's Cloak & Dagger cover for that series, Byrne did a Marvel Universe picnic about to be ruined by Dr. Doom with a jar of ants...). Terrific pick-up of a very busy piece, congrats!
