DescriptionAs much as I like Chevalier Ardent, it took me a while to find a page that moves me enough... Page 44 of "La Princesse Captive" just does that: Ardent, the reckless hero, rides home in the Sunset and reconvenes with his old friends, bragging about his triumphs, having rescued the princess and not noticing the long faces until...As the skies gradually turn to a mix of fiery oranges and reds, he notices at last there's something amiss and he freezes in mid-air, pointing at the void where (as the following page will show) his now destroyed-castle used to stand... Even without the colors (also by Craenhals), the work on the lights on this page is nothing short of spectacular. Shadows increase with each panel, blurring the figures, weighing more heavily on the characters (especially Ardent, going from playful child to solemn figure in mere moments) until the setting sun reveals the truth in a real cinematographic stop-motion gesture. Really powerful!... Note : "La Princesse Captive" was published in Magazine form in 1974 and the whole story was regrouped for an album in 1978. Social/Sharing |
