Description

This was a great story how I got this: At a NYC convention in 1994 or so, I was hanging out in the artist's alley. I was getting a sketch from Mary Wilshire and Luke McDonnell was supposed to be occupying the seat next to her. As he was the then current artist on Iron Man, I hoped he would show for me to get a sketch from him too. Shortly thereafter, a tall thin gentleman sat in the seat next to Mary. He told her how awful the ride had been down from Upstate NY and he was all wired from the drive. I wasn't quite sure who he was, but he looked familiar. I asked Mary if he was Luke McDonnell, but he overheard and said, "oh, yeah sure, I'm him!" and then proceded to crank out an Iron Man sketch. About three quarters of the way through it, he said it looked awful(something wrong with the hands he said). At this point I was pretty sure he wasn't Luke, but I couldn't be sure that he was who I really thought he was. Anyways, he starts in on another sketch(this one here) and after penciling the torso and head, said he needed to walk around a bit to relax. I aske him if he was selling me these sketches and how much he wanted. He said just take them outta here...!
Well, when he walked away, I asked Mary, "was that Barry Smith?". She smiled and said yes. Later on in the show, I saw Barry talking with someone and asked if he wouldn't mind signing the sketches he had done. I told him no one would believe me that Barry Smith had done them. So he put his BWS on it.

I was at the same con,at the Jacob Javits center right? I was about 17 years old. This was shortly after BWS started his Rune run for Malibu. I have a polaroid photo of Barry from that day. He didn't seem to be in a good mood and he was only doing one autograph a person. I didn't dare ask for a sketch. I like the Iron Man piece also.
