Valentine's Day Couple as Slave Leia and Boba Fett

This is the culmination of nearly two months of work which expanded my horizons in terms of mixed media. Photo referenced for the attire and the likenesses (plus the back tattoo), this was a part-birthday-part-Valentine's-Day sketch of a recent couple as Slave Leia and Boba Fett from the Star Wars mythos. On an 11 x 17" 3-ply Strathmore board with pencils, inks and copic markers, my problem came when I had to implement smoke, given that it's the Carbonite Chamber from Episode IV, where Han gets frozen and taken by Fett. An easy out would be copics, but I wanted something more organic, so I decided on chalk. I used pastel chalk to provide a rusty mist around the area, and followed up with a matt finish to make sure everything stayed in place. I also used white chalk to soften the edges of the light blue smoke on the catwalk. Overall I'm extremely proud of this piece and can't wait to try my luck on the next one.
