DescriptionEpic art by Rick Griffin...This is the title splash from the 6 page story published in Zap #6 from 1978. I've coveted this art for a Loooooooooooong time. and it's a real pleasure to finally say it's mine. 8.5 x 14 inches. As you may know, the Omo Bob Rides South story, as featured in Zap #6, 1978, was originally a six page story. As it exists today, and has for the last 30 years or so, it is only a five page story. And here's what happened as relayed to me by underground comix expert and publisher Glenn Bray: "The story as I recall, some (30) years ago?: Rick had an art show at a college. That last page from OMO BOB was stolen right off the walls, and never seen again. This was told to me by Rick. I have no reason to doubt it. He had plenty of other art to sell for whatever he wanted, and I don’t see him splitting up that story. BTW: I was the first outside of his family to see that story in the flesh. A mindblower." Interestingly the remaining pages (all 5 in a row) still tell this "story" in a complete way: The last owners discovered the following info about the art...."Until recently it was believed that the sixth, missing page was the only signed page. I was taking a look at the story and noticed that the fifth page is indeed signed and inscribed “to be continued.” I contacted Glenn Bray again about it and he said this: "INDEED an uncovery! And VERY Griffin-esque if I may add. As you know the story was printed in ZAP as a 6-pager. If I can enter the mindset of Griffin, my conjecture would be that he got up to page 5 and hit a wall. His signature & TO BE CONTINUED was blacked out when the 6th page came to mind. Or maybe the ZAP guys just didn’t want a “to be continued” story in the book, and forced his hand. But I’ve never heard otherwise. Knowing this, I don’t feel so bad that the 6th page is missing..although I have a feeling that someday it may arise. It is what it is! Social/Sharing |
