In The Artist's own words," The second sketch for the cover of the Todd McCaffrey book, commissioned by Del Rey (Random House). See the Fantasy Gallery for the painting.

This second drawing is much closer to the finished piece and has a more decorative feel. The Art Director asked for a landscape of rolling wheat fields, but he seemed to suggest vast prairies stretching on forever. My own feeling is that Pern is closer to a medieval society, without modern farming technology, and that fields would be smaller and more irregular."
