This was one of two proposal pages that Alex pitched to DC, the other one being Superman (also in this gallery). Note the changes from the finished piece, including the fact that he originally wanted to use the older style Batman logo

I still that logo is the best, alltime. Love the juxtoposition of that logo with the painted style.

I going to venture a guess that Ross used Bob Kane's splash panel from Detective Comics #30 as the inspiration for this splash panel. Very cool - DC should have went with this one.
