Cary Elwes as Westley (aka Dread Pirate Roberts) from the Princess Bride

This was a last minute idea, that I am very glad that it came together. I went to the Kansas City Planet Comicon 2015 to meet Cary Elwes, star of my favorite movie The Princess Bride as well as other great movies. I wanted something special because I don't like just buying the headshots that celebrities sell. I thought of getting an original commission, so I decided to ask Phil if he would be able to draw Westly for me. I described the scene to him and gave him my reference. Phil said he would get it to me Sunday.
I came back on Sunday, Phil had a not saying he was out to a brunch until 11. Oh no, Cary has had huge lines all weekend and I hope I will be able to get it done. So I walked around the con hoping that it would still happen and that I could get Cary to sign the artwork as well. Phil did show up and started the commission. I stood and watched as he drew and heard some of the people's comments as they walked by and saw what he was drawing. My daughter and her friend came by and I asked them to go check on the line and see how long it was, they texted me back and said it was not horrible and that they were standing in line waiting for him. Yes! Now I have a line saver.
Phil finished the commission and then handed it to me, with the ink still wet, so that I could get in line and meet Cary. Now the boring part of standing in line for about 90 minutes.
Then the attendant opened the curtain and we got to go in and see him. He was a very nice guy. I handed him the commission to sign, he looked at it and was amazed, he asked who drew it, and then if I would go pick him up one if he gave me the money. I had to explain to him that it was a original commission, and that was the only one. He then asked if I would go back to Phil and have him come by the booth. He asked how much it was, and then told me to tell Phil to not give him any "funny discount" on a commission because he was a celebrity!
Then my daughter and her friend were introduced to him and my daughter's friend looked like she was going to faint (she is also a huge Princess Bride fan).
It ended up being a wonderful day and a great memory. (I am waiting to hear from Phil if Cary gave him a commission or not, I hope so!)
