DescriptionThis was published in Galaxy magazine, Aug. 1959, with a story entitled 'No Life of Their Own'. This was apparently the third of three illustrations Wood did for this story. One day I'll have to track down a copy of the magazine so I can see the others and read the story. I especially want to figure out why the kid on the left is levitating!Wally Wood is of course best known for his incredible EC Comics and MAD work among other outstanding comics work, but he did a huge number of covers and interior art for Galaxy magazine. Update: I've found the issue at archive.org (https://archive.org/details/galaxymagazine-1959-08/page/n9/mode/2up) I'll post more images in the additional image section. It's a very long story that I just skimmed, but the levitating boy is 'Fancy Pants', a telekinetic alien boy with a complex name that the child narrator, Steve, can't pronounce. Steve is the boy wearing glasses, a normal Earthling. The glasses allow him to see alien 'halflings'. The glasses were made by Butch's dad, a talented alien optician. Butch is the one with the device that looks like a rifle, also made by Butch's dad. It can rupture the wall between the two worlds. The little guy jumping through the rupture is Nature Boy, who is described as a furry little boy. The characters around Nature Boy are halflings. The halflings bring good luck, or bad luck, depending. They want their own Live-It sets to wear on their heads. Live-It sets are described as VR systems. The two grown men in the illustration are two of the fathers. The story seems to be about accepting immigrants. Who says the Fifties were simpler times? Social/Sharing |
