Description

I ran across this Lyle Justis (1892-1960) illustration/drawing on eBay, and could not pass it up. Wonderful pen work, combined with terrific figure work. According to Walt Reed's book, Justis was self-taught, and used "...warm-up sheets, covered with exploratory characters and poses. With these drawings as a guide, he was able to retain much free informality and vigor in his finished renderings." This sheet appears just such a piece.

I don't know where this piece saw print, but it came with accompanying information about being done for a "fairy story" by John McIntyre, which should put it at circa 1920-30.
