Description

In the never-ending debate of whether or not this hobby is driven by nostalgia, I admit I land clearly on the "remembering my past" camp. So, I’ve been looking for a nice example of a childhood favorite, Adam Strange. In retrospect, Adam Strange was a great example of the pure escapism of DC comics at the beginning of the Silver Age. Unlike the Science Fiction of the EC books, there were little or no morality plays in those books. The focus was more on good, clean, simple Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon type of excitement. For me, it was just fun! Adam Strange was created by the vision of Julius Schwartz during the late 50’s, a prime time for all things science fiction. The twist with Adam was that he was a normal Earth man who was plucked by a special “Zeta beam” and sent across the universe to the Alpha Centuri system and the planet Rann. It was there that he found his love, Alanna (the daughter of the scientist who created the Zeta beam) and where he became a hero. I started reading Mystery in Space in reprints, and loved the quirkiness of the book. My theory was if it could happen to Adam Strange, then I still had a shot. My latent mutant powers hadn’t manifested themselves yet; I wasn’t born on another planet, and I just didn’t think I was going to get exposed to any magic stones or helpful radiation. In recent times, the character was revived and much was played upon the fact that no one believed that he went to another planet and it was all a delusion. I write that off to the cynicism of our current times, versus the "let’s remember it’s a comic and roll with it" view of the late 1950’s and early 1960s.

Adam Strange first appeared in Showcase #17 near the end of 1958. Showcase was essentially DC’s tryout book. After two more issues, he was given a shot at Mystery in Space, a science fiction anthology book. While his numbers were good enough to get him a spot in MiS, top management never really believed that he had the strength to carry his own title. As an anthology title, Mystery in Space had a number of recurring story lines and characters, but none was as long lasting as Adam Strange. He first appeared in issue 53 in October of 1959 and was a mainstay of the book through issue 100. Schwartz created the character, and helped plot the stories. But, he was DC’s editor and assigned the writing to Gardner Fox. The pencils initially were handled by Mike Sekowsky in Showcase, shortly thereafter, the reins were soon handed over to Carmine Infantino. The inking was predominantly Murphy Anderson, although there were others that jumped in from time to time. I have been looking for the right piece, and I think I finally found one to fit the bill.

Please take a look and enjoy the title splash to Mystery in Space #72 art by Carmine Infantino and Murphy Anderson, “The Multiple Menace Weapon."

There's something about that lonely head off to the right, sandwiched between the text that really makes it an interesting splash to look at....the direction of her gaze brings together two seemingly separate parts.......I really like this!

Although I may stand in the anti-nostalgia camp, I can certainly understand and appreciate the emotions that stem from acquiring pieces with a sentimental attachment. But whether you grew up in this era or not. Or you read these books or not. You can still appreciate the masterful work of Messieurs Infantino and Anderson here. What an incredible splash. Love those floating cities. “You’re our only hope…..” Now where have I heard that line before? Heh-heh!

Its a lot easier to claim nostalgia over art when the art is this good. Of course if the art was really bad, you might not have enjoyed it very much and then nostalgia goes out the door too!

Zero nostalgia for me in this case, but love it anyway. Simply amazing and wonderful art.

I believe the nostalgia tag can be valid, but not exclusive; I myself have a deep appreciate for art that I didn't experience as a child (e.g. Krazy Kat, Little Nemo, Flash Gordon, EC art) but I like to think that the very best 'phantasmagoria'and 'fantastic' art of our hobby transcends nostalgia. What entertained and delighted the imagination years ago often still does, now in the 21st century. Ron, congrats on another lovely piece added to your stellar and timeless collection.

I have no nostalgia for Adam Strange. I grew up reading comics in the 80's but while I liked the comics of my era I LOVED the comics of the Golden and Silver Age. It was fun. It was what comics were about. Fantastic adventures. Not gritty realism. I loved Adam Strange and am very fond of his Mystery In Space run. This is a glorious piece.

In my humble opinion, Murphy Anderson was DC's Joe Sinnott. His inks are just outstanding, bringing out the best in every page he touched! A beautiful splash, my friend!!! Thank you for sharing!!!!

Magic team up of talent, classic character, perfect era. In the words of the immortal Craig Robinson from his Academy Award Winning role in Hot Tub Time Machine, "...and tight..She's so tight."

Adam Strange was a great character. I enjoyed collecting and reading the comics when I was early into collecting and finding my way. I liked the naivety of stories and adventures. Nostalgia or not, Adam Strange was and is a great character and a perfect example like this would be on most collector's want list. I know one is on mine.

Ron - I agree with your comments all the way -- Adam's costume was was so neat and his backstory - trying to get to his wife -- was amazing and then you layer in the art and you have an instant masterpiece. Great page.

oh sure... a great art page is a great art page (and this certainly is!!!), but i've overpaid several times to get a page from a coveted childhood book!!!!! so add me to the list of nostalgic collectors!

Nostalgia, as many have pointed out, does not exclude great art. If by nostalgia, you mean there is a retro charm (the rocket pack, the helmet fin, the Flash Gordon story aspects, the sheer whiteness of the main characters and even the aliens, etc.) about the character and his stories that renders him of his time, I would agree. There is also a sense of hope (for the future) and faith (in intelligence and engineering and technological know-how) that remains timeless, as does the clean and wonderful art.

Floating cities... Too little has been said about Carmine Infantino's extraordinary sense of architectural design and how he could conjure gorgeous urban dreamscapes at a time when cities could still be dreams... A masterclass in elegance!...

Just because people collect OA from artists/runs/etc. that they didn't read as a kid (I have a lot of art from comics I didn't read until much later myself) does NOT mean that these purchases are not fundamentally rooted in nostalgia. Because, without a general nostalgia for comics, including the thrill of discovering new things within the medium, we wouldn't be collecting, right? Of course, it's that much more special to obtain something you fondly remember from your youth, like this fine example - congratulations on another historic pick-up!

Adam Strange isn't a character I ever really read but your write up really makes me feel like I should have. A strikingly great piece of art, nostalgia or not.
