DescriptionRich Buckler,Jerry Ordway,Mike Machlan,Rick Hoberg and Arvel Jones. Just to name a few of the amazing artists that graced the pages of All-Star Squadron. Then of course there was Mike Clark, who's work really went unnoticed during some of the final issues of the book. The covers alone were worth the price of admission.Jump back to several months ago when my good friend Damon Owens introduced me to Mike who has been out of the business for many years now. Mike was doing some commission work for Damon and I asked if he was willing to take another crack at All-Star Squadron. Mike gleefully said yes. Ideas started flowing in Mike's head and I gave him full reign to create something we would both enjoy. Being the commission was to include Green Lantern and Wildcat, Mike asked if it was ok to add the newspaper strip character Dondi who was created by the late Irwin Hasen. Thus this became a tribute commission(and then cover),paying tribute to the great Mr. Hasen who passed away this past year at the ripe old age of 96! Mike just nailed the pencil layout on the head, creating a wonderful scene of Victory over the Nazi's with my favorite members of the Squadron and JSA, adding humor and personality to each character. Next up was who to ink this? My buddy(and one of my go-to Nova cover guys) Joe Singleton came to mind first. Joe has been really turning out some nifty digital inks these days and completed this in less than 3 days, adding some pretty cool FX! What to do with this next? well of course turn it into a mock cover. All-Star Squadron ended, much to my regret, with issue 67, so why not extend the series by one, and make this #68. Personally I think this looks as good as some of the great covers Mike produced back in the 80's if not better. Mike has not lost a step and is just a fun guy to work with! Maybe there will be a #69 somewhere down the road? I think so! For now enjoy this. Social/Sharing |

Nice! And poor Robotman looks like he had a rough time in that last battle!

Great, great, great commission!!!! Love Mike's take on Hourman! Nice tip of the hat to Irwin with both Dondi and Alan Scott sporting a distinctive Hasan feel. Congrats!!!!!

Congrats!!!!!The addition of Dondi was all Mike. I was familiar with the character,but had no idea Irwin was his creator. Hourman and Wildcat were the standouts here for me!

The Squadron aren't the only ones who are all-stars. Shalda, Clark and Singleton hit a home run with this commission!
