Despite having been unable to read Ben Casey (has it been reissued somewhere?), I have always been attracted to Neal Adams' debut. I was tempted to say "formative years", but I restrained myself, since it just looks to me like he was already completely mastering his craft.

This may look as quite a mundane story (complete with TV hero!), a far cry from the gaudy super-hero tales just to come, but the dynamics are all just the same and already perfectly in place.

In all the reasons why Neal Adams's arrival on the comic books field was such a shock is his uncanny talent to infuse gritty realism with high-tension drama.

You can see it here, operating at full speed!

Oh! And, as an added bonus: Adams inking Adams is a real treat!

I agree! I still don't know if there is some sort of collected edition for Ben Casey. All I know so far from the series comes from the scattered original strips. Not bad, though!...

A beautiful strip Al. Congrats. There isn't a Ben Casey collected edition yet although that is a work-in-progress. In the meantime we've put together a fan archive at the Neal Adams Appreciation page on facebook.
