Description

Got this sketch from William Steig in a Boston bookstore. i had written to him before, with no luck. I even called him on the phone in 1980 to ask him. He grumbled something about autograph collecting being "stupid hero worshipping" and hung up on me. Then, one afternoon in 1993, I saw the elderly Steig strolling down Newbury Street in Boston with his wife. With no pen or paper on me, and afraid to lose him in the crowd, I followed them for several blocks. Then, fate intervened! They went into a large bookstore. i followed them in, ran to the children's book section, found one of his books, grabbed a pen from a cashier, and approached. He was very nice.
