DescriptionBill Woggon was a long time Archie Comics writer/artist. He's best known for his creation, Katy Keene. Bill drew her from her debut in Wilbur Comics #5 in 1945 until 1961. She appeared in various formats and titles. Why did I decide to buy this piece? Well, there are several reasons.
The problem is that Bill had a studio and used several assistants and ghosts. My eye isn't quite good enough to be sure that something is actually Bill's pencil work; at least, I don't have much confidence in my judgment. Bill’s assistants would specialize on types of stories and would cover various parts of the production process, e.g., ranging from complete art to inks. Most of that work is signed by Bill and no one else. When I need help determining who did a piece of KK art, I turn to John Sterling Lucas. John was the person recommended by Bill to take over the comic when it was revived in 1983 and he's an acknowledged Katy Keene expert. He's also an e-friend. Why do I bother to turn to John? Well, I bought a piece for my middle daughter that while lovely was misattributed. My daughter's Katy Keene page though credited to Bill by Heritage was really drawn by Tom Cooke per John. One of the giveaways on that page is that Bill didn't like drawing animals so he farmed that work out to Tom. Another is that you can see the differences in Katy's face. When this page came up, I contacted John to get his opinion about the artists involved. It looked like Woggon's pencil work to me, but who was the inker, I wondered? John immediately said Cassie Bill. Various sources, including John S. Lucas, have told me that Bill's assistants included:
Despite their long association with Katy Keene and Bill Woggon, there's not much available on the internet about Cassie Bill and Bill's other major assistant, Helen Martin, but they were with him throughout his work on Katy. As an aside, Floyd mentions his time with Woggon in his book, Floyd Norman and Animated Life, and on his blog, here. This comic is not indexed in the GCD. That's too bad. I'll have to find a copy. In the Additional Images, you will find three pictures of Bill and related people:
You will also find the printed page. The idea for this page, for the cover, and for one of the stories was credited to Glen Husar (Age 15) B0x 38, Ashmont, Alberta, Canada. I bet he was happy to see his name throughout. Social/Sharing |

Beautiful pin-up page, and I enjoyed reading your description and seeing the photo of the Woggon family.
