DescriptionRobert Sidney Smith (February 13, 1877 – October 20, 1935), known as Sidney Smith, was the creator of the influential GUMPS.These panels, measuring 6.5 x 20.5", dated 11/11/1935, were drawn by Smith. He was known to be ahead of his deadlines. This strip was received in the Tribune Engraving Room 10/25/after his untimely death. It's title is "Going Up". Optimism in the 30's. On March 15, 1922, that Smith signed the first $1,000,000 contract ever given a comic strip artist. The agreement was to as a bonus, the creator of the Gump strip was given a Rolls Royce. In 1935, he signed a new contract, giving him $150,000 a year. On his way home from signing that contract, he crashed head-on collision at the age of 58 on October 20, 1935.
