This 3D shadowbox of THE INCREDIBLE HULK #181 was made for client Ketan Patel. Original art by Herb Trimpe, John Romita, & Gaspar Saladino 1974.
This was done using color laser scan prints (based on the image Ketan sent me) on heavy semi-gloss paper given the high value of the book (first appearance of Wolverine). About 20 copies were used. Each layer is separated by balsa wood colored black. The project took over 30 hours.
The 3D is about 5.5 inches deep as expected given the layout of Wendigo being in the back and the fight area between Hulk & Wolverine. Their fight was a bit difficult to work out with Wolverine technically coming forward from behind Hulk, but with his claws furthest thing forward along with the Hulk's left arm. It may be an interesting classic cover being the first appearance of Wolverine, but not really drawn dimensionally or logistically very well (as with a lot of Marvel covers of that era).
What is not seen very well in these photos are the subtle details I brought out in 3D of the background mountains, rocks, and flying pieces of chain.
