Description
Jack Monroe, like Cap, is a man out of time. The character has been my favorite for a quite a while now.
One, because I just think he looks badass in this outfit (or his regular series trench coat getup). The costume is not quite spandex which was fairly unique for comics in the 90s. He's also urban and edgy and pissed off all the time, but somehow found a way to do the right thing, even if it crossed a line or two.
I also like the idea that he was a kid basically fascinated with a celebrity - so much so that he tried to become him. Eventually he was then frozen, skipped ahead in time, and awoken when everything had changed - a lot like Cap. Meanwhile he was still someone who had a lot to learn about the reality of the world - until then he had basically been living a lie.
I really like the concept. He was still a mixed up punk from the 50s when he was thrust into the 80s alone and lost. Cap took him under his wing and over time Jack woke up again, this time to reality, and his disillusioned rebellious side took over.
This series and this cover stopped me in my tracks at my lcs when I was in my teens still reading comics, but also listening to bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana - and the character just spoke to me.
Thanks Fabian and James for an awesome mini-series. The 25 issue run later was also very unique, and one of my favorites, touching on divisive topics with a dirty street feel - all while a guy with stun discs and a shotgun has to go buy diapers and baby food.
Fun pencils on the back, with Fry sketching a bit of the 80's version of Nomad.
