It's been five years since I last saw Juli Mayers, way back at Boston Comic Con in 2011 when she did the John Byrne Troia for me.

Felicity is the Sleeping Beauty from Goodtimes Entertainment's rendition of the fairy tale. I haven't done much on that theme, but I grew up with those movies alongside the Disney animated films and Faerie Tale Theater, which I believe helped get me used to alternate universe stories without getting confused.

I actually really like how the 1995 adaption stuck closer to the original fairy tale, but added some darker elements. Felicity doesn't fall asleep right away, instead she starts out feeling woozy, confused, and ultimately scared of what's happening, begging for someone to help before trying to apologize to her fairy companion Primrose for not listening to her and then collapsing. To make matters worse, the evil fairy Odelia takes the time to gloat and point out how Primrose made everything so much "better" for her, in that by altering the death spell so Felicity sleeps for a hundred years it will ensure she'll awaken to everyone she cared about long dead while her parents will grow old and die knowing she'll be all alone when the spell wears off. There's also the fact that the movie shows people actually dying. They also try to say that Felicity and her prince have been dreaming about each other to avoid having her true love kiss come from a total stranger.

I like Juli's sharp lines on this, and I'm glad she remembered me from so long ago.
