Description

This was the last Goosebumps sketch I got at NYCC this year.

Kathryn is from the third Goosebumps entry, the first "Monster Blood" book. She's Evan Ross's great aunt, a seemingly crazy deaf woman who is unable to lip read or sign. Evan has to stay with her while his parents shop for a new house, and she scares Evan with weird behavior and a tendency to say bizarre, disturbing things like she's a witch or that she'll put Evan's dog in a pie. She has a cat named Sarabeth whom she claims is pure evil.

Kathryn later turns out to be a lot more sympathetic and not as crazy as she looks. It turns out (in what is pretty much a major asspull), that Sarabeth is a witch who has been controlling Kathryn for 20 years. She made her deaf and refused to let her learn sign language or lip reading in order to keep her isolated and under her control. She makes Kathryn enchant the titular Monster Blood in order to kill Evan and his friend Andy so they wouldn't learn her secret, and Kathryn feels so guilty she attempts to commit suicide to stop the Monster Blood. Thankfully, Sarabeth is destroyed by the Monster Blood herself, ceasing her control on Kathryn and removing her deafness.

Despite how out of nowhere that twist came, Kathryn (to me at least) is still one of the only likable characters in the Monster Blood books besides Andy.

I like how Adam captured a vacant, clearly disturbed look in Kathryn's eyes and face, almost like Norman Bates' mother.
