Description

The newest entry in the Heroes Redrawn Project: HELL-RIDER! In the early 1970s, a short-lived company called Skywald Publications published a black-and-white magazine starring a motorcycle riding superhero called Hell-Rider. And get this: His creator, Gary Friedrich, is the same writer who later created the better-known and more successful GHOST RIDER!

Although HR rode a souped-up motorcycle like HR, that's about where the similarities end. In fact, Hell-Rider probably had more in common with Captain America than Johnny Blaze. Hell-Rider was actually Brick Reese -- yes, "Brick" -- a Vietnam veteran who was injected with a kind of super-soldier serum which gave him enhanced strength and endurance. He didn't have the ability to shoot fire from his hands, a la Ghost Rider -- but he did have a flame thrower on the front of his bike which he was reluctant to use. And when he shot flames at his foes, the result was a flaming corpse. None of that burning of the soul stuff that GR did.

HELL-RIDER only lasted 2 issues. The art was by Ross Andru -- perhaps better known for his long stint on AMAZING SPIDER-MAN -- with inks by Mike Esposito. The page you see on the left here is from the first issue. It features HR mixing it up with bunch of masked kidnappers. I love the work Andru did here, but wondered how it would look if drawn today by another artist. Enter: TREVOR VON EEDEN!

The ever-talented Mr. Von Eeden is a veteran artist perhaps best known as being the original artist and co-creator of DC's BLACK LIGHTNING. He has many other credits under his belt as well. When I commissioned him to revisualize and redraw this page, he more than rose to the occasion. That's his reinterpretation on the right. I think he knocked this one into the parking lot. If you've considered getting a commission by Trevor, let me tell you you cannot go wrong. Very reasonably priced, quick turnaround, and one of the most pleasant and enthusiastic individuals I've ever dealt with. He's one of those artists that I will always go back to. If you get more pages from this book re-drawn, may I respectfully suggest 'Brick House' as a sub-gallery name? (Dynamic work by Trevor. I love his spin on this source material.)

As I mentioned in the gallery description, this whole thing wouldn't exist if not for you, the man who inspired this whole concept. As for more Hell-Rider pieces -- maybe -- but I've got some other characters I'm having worked on before I revisit him.
