Description
Neal started this cover in 1970 for Thor #180 but, according to Neal, Marie Severin had done a layout for the same book that Stan Lee asked Neal to follow. So Neal stopped working on this one and did the one Marie designed. Neal looked at the sketch lines on the cover and he said they indicated what direction he was going with it and he was happy to finish it in 2016.

Below - you can see the original 1970s cover with Odin, Thor and part of Mephisto. Above, you can see the finished cover (by Neal) as he completed Mephisto and added the demon. Again, per Neal, the layout was intended (and is) a split screen of 2 worlds. Thor is being cast out of Asgard into wherever Mephisto is.

As always, Neal and Jason were PHENOMENAL to work with. Neal is incredible and pours his heart out into his work -- I encourage everyone to get to his website and purchase your some of Neal's work for your own collection!

Thank you to Neal and Jason!

I may be the 1st to comment on this but for once, words fail me. This is a spectacular slice of unknown Adams art.

That is a before and after combination that would put Charles Atlas to shame. It just looks great!

Absolutely fantastic story, and the cover is even better than the story -- a masterpiece 46 years in the making!

This is really fascinating, Michael - what a great story! And, how about Neal's skills being as sharp as ever - really impressive.

What a terrific piece of history! Neal was on another planet in 1970, doing work that is still a benchmark for comic books, imo and I love how his drawing has evolved over the years. Even after near 50 years he still does art that radiates power. Can't imagine what a dream this must have been for you. thanks for sharing this, it's awesome!
