Description

Illustration from the serialized story "The Great Stone of Sardis" (Harper's 1897, 95, 913; ch XXV) - the original page is included as an additional image.

Peter Sheaf Hersey Newell (March 5, 1862 � January 15, 1924) was an American artist and writer.

A native of McDonough County, Illinois, Newell built a reputation in the 1880s and 1890s for his humorous drawings and poems, which appeared in Harper�s Weekly, Harper�s Bazaar, Scribner�s Magazine, The
Saturday Evening Post, Judge, and other publications. He later wrote and illustrated several popular children�s books.

Hi George. Thanks for the offer. I found the whole thing on line (which is where the image of the original page came from). I'm impressed to know that you have the book and recognize it. Hah.

Been years since I have seen a Newell original - he did one of those weird upside down strips (as well as a version of Alice in Wonderland that was the one I read to my daughter years ago) We need to get together now I am here though finding stuff is still a challenge!
