When I heard that Joe was doing a new Marvel Masterpieces set I was looking forward to perhaps picking up a few paintings but alas none were available.
Then when I saw Marel had picked up Joe's corner box theme and released a group of titles the two that jumped out at me were Punisher and Thanos.

I saw the pencil sketch of Thanos Joe had posted. I immediately recognized it as being inspired by the first big Thanos splash from Captain Marvel 26 that can be found in Rick Loshiavo's gallery. I already have a Thanos piece and for most characters keep it to one example...but inquired about it anyway. As the piece progressed it got harder and harder to take a pass on it as it got better and better. The back ground was stunning and then when I saw the final image it was game set and match.

Joe wound up keeping a lot of the upper part of Thanos' face as it was in that early appearance and put his own touches on Thanos' chin to give him that ridged chin look that Starlin would later develop as he fleshed the character out. Let's face it the skrull in that splash has more a Thanos chin than Thanos.
