Description

Here's a cool tag illustrating Robert E. Howard's superb Conan novella, Queen of the Black Coast. This was designed for the first Wandering Star Conan limited hardcover, and reprinted in the DelRey mass market paperback.

In addition to creating a large and stunningly detailed composition for use as a full page illustration for every story in the book, Mark Schultz was assigned the task of coming up with a handful of smaller drawings for each, plus avatars like this to punctuate and decorate the final pages of all thirteen yarns. As if all this wasn't enough of an artistic achievement, Mark rendered several exquisite oil paintings in color for the deluxe edition.

Mark implied in his interview for the TwoMorrows book, Modern Masters, that Queen of the Black Coast was probably both his personal favorite and arguably Howard's most singular Conan effort. Certainly, many REH fans would agree with him about its merits. I'm delighted to add a piece to my collection that's based on the tale the artist wanted most to illustrate.

This is tiny, and on a board that's only 6 x 10 inches. I haven't found a way yet to neatly store such small drawings, since I rarely frame my art. But I love them anyway.
