I really liked the series Quasar. It had a very cool Marvel cosmic setting and I always thought Wendell Vaughn's Quasar was a great character and a lot of fun to read. I especially liked the early Paul Ryan issues. This particular comic was an Acts of Vengeance tie-in plus it had one of my very favorite villains Absorbing Man - here on the cover absorbing the Quantum Bands! What is a huge coincidence is that this story takes place chronologically after the events of Hulk #348 where Hulk fights Absorbing Man. This is his very next appearance after that fight and I have that cover. How the heck did I manage that?

What makes this cover extra special is that there is a wonderfully drawn - HISTORIC - Venom inset as Venom was supposed to appear in this issue but he doesn't really appear until issue #6 in a brief cameo. I asked Tom DeFalco why this was and he could not remember. Nobody seems to know and I can only imagine the original story or script had Venom in #5 but after Paul Ryan drew the cover plans were changed and he was bumped to just that first 1-2 pages in issue #6. Why this is special is that this drawn image of Venom - which would be used exactly on the cover of 6 - represents just the 3rd cover appearance of Venom ever. It is only about a year after Venom first appeared and he would grace the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #315, #316 and next show up on the cover of Quasar #6 with this image! Not only would it be just the 3rd time we see Venom on a cover but it is the VERY FIRST time Venom appeared outside of Amazing Spider-Man. It is Venom's first guest appearance anywhere else!

So whatever the mystery about why Venom showed up here (and in such an awesomely drawn image) only adds to this fanastic Paul Ryan Marvel battle cover that crossed over into one of my favorite Marvel events, Acts Of Vengeance!

VERY cool- I'm a big Quasar fan too and recently re-read the first 25 issues- amazed to find it was one BIG story and how Gruenwald plotted it two years out! Paul Ryan was indedd great on these issues- making Wendell less uptight and more relatable an issue at a time.

I knew Paul well and he LOVED his run on Quasar. He just didn't like all the crossovers and such. He wanted to keep his art simple

So much could be said about this cover. Quasar, Paul Ryan, Absorbing Man! Add to the fact that it's an Acts Of Vengeance cover too! A new highlight in your collection Jason! Again I am green with envy!

I remember and loved this issue. Absorbing Man is one of my favorites, too, and an early Venom? Out of the park, man. Congrats on an amazing cover!
